COVID-19: Welcome Measures Announced for PPM Customers

There will be greater protection for pre-paid meter (PPM) customers during the coronavirus crisis, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has announced.

Working with energy providers BEIS has announced several measures which should be good news for PPM customers who may be financially affected by the coronavirus. Customers who are unable to top-up their card can speak to their supplier to discuss solutions with them, these include having a discretionary amount added to their card or being sent a pre-loaded top-up card. Disconnections of credit meters have also been suspended.

“The government has committed to do whatever it takes to get our nation through the impacts of this coronavirus pandemic,” Alok Sharmer, Secretary of State for BEIS said. “Today those most in need can rest assured that a secure supply of energy will continue to flow into their homes during this difficult time,” Sharmer added.

According to BEIS the measures will benefit over 4 million customers.

Energy suppliers have also agreed to support any customer who is facing financial difficulties. This support could include pausing or reducing debt and bill payments.
